I spent twenty five years inside Lebanese banking and digital transformation before I moved into AI advisory work full time. That means I watched Lebanon’s financial sector navigate the consequences of weak governance long before artificial intelligence was part of any conversation. I understand, perhaps more concretely than most commentators on this subject, what it looks like when an institution confuses having a policy with having governance.

What I am seeing now, as an AI expert working across Lebanon and the Arab region, is that same pattern beginning to repeat itself in the AI context. Institutions are deploying AI tools, approving AI strategies, and in some cases already using AI in credit, compliance, and customer service without the governance infrastructure to manage what they are introducing.

I want to be specific about what I mean, because the word governance gets used loosely and that looseness is part of the problem.

Governance in the AI context is not a policy document. It is the set of living structures that determine, on a continuous basis, how AI decisions get made, who is accountable for them, and what happens when they produce outcomes that were not anticipated.

^{What does AI governance actually mean for a bank?}

Governance in the AI context is not a policy document. It is not a committee that meets quarterly to review an AI dashboard. It is the set of living structures that determine, on a continuous basis, how AI decisions get made, who is accountable for them, how they get audited, and what happens when they produce outcomes that were not anticipated.

For a bank in Lebanon, that means several things that most institutions in the sector have not yet addressed seriously.

It means knowing, with precision, which decisions inside your institution are currently being influenced by algorithmic systems and which human beings are accountable for reviewing and overriding those decisions when necessary. It means having an audit trail for AI outputs that is as rigorous as the audit trail you maintain for any other regulated decision. It means having an ethics boundary defined in writing, reviewed by the board, and enforced operationally, not just cited in a sustainability report.

And perhaps most importantly for the Lebanese context specifically, it means having a clear answer to the question of what happens to the AI system and the data it operates on under conditions of institutional stress. Lebanese banks have experienced, within recent memory, conditions that stress tested governance frameworks that many assumed were robust. AI governance needs to be built with the same honest accounting of risk.

^{Where are the gaps I see most often?}

The most common gap is the absence of a clear owner for AI governance at the board level. In most Lebanese banks I encounter in my advisory work, AI is being driven by the technology function or, increasingly, by business development. Governance typically follows technology ownership, which means it ends up sitting with people whose primary incentive is deployment speed rather than risk management. That is not a criticism of those individuals. It is a structural design flaw.

The second gap is the absence of explainability requirements for AI outputs that affect customers. If a credit algorithm influences a lending decision, can the bank explain to the customer, in plain language, the basis for that decision? Under emerging regulatory frameworks across the Arab region, including developing frameworks in Lebanon, the Gulf, and Egypt, this is not a nice to have. It is becoming a legal requirement. Most institutions are not yet building for it.

The third gap is data governance preceding AI governance. Before you can govern an AI system responsibly, you have to govern the data it trains on. In the Lebanese banking sector, where data architecture has historically been fragmented across legacy systems, this foundational requirement is frequently the one that gets skipped because it is unglamorous, expensive, and does not produce a visible output that looks like innovation.

^{What should Lebanese banks actually do?}

The honest answer is that the sequence matters as much as the substance.

Establish board level accountability for AI governance before you scale any AI deployment. Not a subcommittee. A named executive with a defined mandate and reporting line to the board.

Conduct an honest audit of every AI or algorithmic tool currently operating inside the institution, including tools that were not originally classified as AI, such as credit scoring models, fraud detection systems, and customer segmentation tools. Understand what they are doing, what data they use, and who is accountable for their outputs.

Build explainability into AI procurement as a non negotiable requirement. If a vendor cannot tell you how their system produces its outputs in terms your compliance and legal teams can work with, that vendor is not yet ready for regulated environments.

And create a governance framework that is reviewed and updated at least annually, not filed after the initial deployment and revisited only when something goes wrong.

Lebanese banks have a genuine opportunity to build AI governance frameworks that are appropriate for their specific context, their regulatory environment, and the trust relationships they maintain with their customers. But that opportunity closes quickly as deployment outpaces governance. The time to build the structure is before the deployment reaches a scale where correcting it becomes operationally disruptive.

When I contributed to a Forbes expert panel recently on how smart teams sell value instead of discounts, I gave an answer that I have been thinking about for much longer than the panel format allowed me to explain. My answer was this: price is a decision, not a reaction. I would walk away from deals where the discussion stays on price, as those clients do not build long term value. If incentives are linked to the profitability employees generate, they begin to think in terms of long term client value, but only if they are first equipped with clear ROI criteria to guide decisions.

Twenty five years inside Lebanese banking and financial services gave me a very specific understanding of what happens when this principle is not followed. It also gave me an understanding of why it is so difficult to follow, especially in environments where short term revenue pressure is intense and where relationship norms make price negotiation feel like a personal rather than a commercial conversation.

Price competition is not a strategy. It is a signal that the institution has not yet defined its value clearly enough to defend it.

Why do smart institutions still compete on price?

Price competition is rarely a strategic choice. It is almost always a symptom of something else: unclear positioning, insufficient understanding of the value being delivered, or a sales culture that has been incentivized to close transactions rather than build relationships.

In the Lebanese banking context, I watched price competition intensify over years in ways that were structurally damaging even when they looked commercially rational in any individual case. The institution that wins a corporate client by offering slightly better terms than a competitor has not won a relationship. It has won a transaction, and it has done so in a way that signals to the client that price is the primary variable the institution is willing to compete on. That signal is very hard to unsend.

This same dynamic plays out across the Arab region. In markets across Lebanon, the Gulf, Egypt, and Jordan, where business culture places high value on relationships, institutions often confuse relationship loyalty with price loyalty. The two are not the same. A client who stays because of the relationship is a client worth building. A client who stays only because of price terms is a client who will leave when someone offers slightly better ones.

AI is changing this dynamic in ways that are worth understanding. As I wrote in an earlier piece this month, AI is lowering the cost of capability across the market. That means competitive advantage can no longer rest primarily on the ability to do things competitors cannot afford to do. It has to rest on something more durable, such as the quality of the relationship, the depth of the understanding, and the clarity of the value proposition.

What does linking incentives to profitability actually change?

The second part of my Forbes panel answer is the part I find most operationally important, and it is the part that gets the least attention in discussions about sales culture.

When salespeople and relationship managers are incentivized on revenue closed or deals won, they optimize for closure. When they are incentivized on the profitability of the clients they bring in, over a meaningful time horizon, they optimize for quality. These are different behaviors, and they produce different client portfolios.

The catch is that incentive redesign only works if the people being incentivized have the tools and the criteria to make quality judgments at the point of decision. If you tell a relationship manager to focus on long term client value but do not give them a clear framework for assessing what that means in practice, the incentive change produces confusion rather than behavior change.

This is where ROI criteria come in. Not as a bureaucratic filter, but as a decision support tool that gives relationship managers confidence to say no to opportunities that do not meet the standard, even when those opportunities are presented by clients they have a personal relationship with. In the Arab region’s business culture, where relationship and face saving dynamics are real and significant, this kind of clarity is particularly valuable. It gives the relationship manager a principled, impersonal basis for a difficult conversation, rather than requiring them to make that conversation feel like a personal rejection.

What has AI added to this question?

AI has made it possible to build ROI assessment criteria that are dynamic rather than static. Rather than applying a fixed scorecard to every opportunity, institutions across Lebanon and the Gulf can now use behavioral and transactional data to develop client specific assessments of likely long term profitability, attrition risk, and cross sell potential that would have required significant manual analysis to produce even five years ago.

This does not change the underlying principle that price is a decision, not a reaction. It changes the quality of information available when that decision is being made, and it changes the speed at which that information can be generated.

For institutions across the Arab region that are building or rebuilding their commercial models in a constrained environment, this combination of clear value positioning, profitability linked incentives, and AI supported decision criteria is one of the more concrete and implementable ways to move away from price competition toward something more durable.

عندما شاركت مؤخرًا في إحدى حلقات الخبراء في Forbes حول كيفية نجاح المؤسسات في بيع القيمة بدلًا من الدخول في حرب الخصومات، كانت إجابتي مختصرة بسبب طبيعة النقاش. قلت ببساطة: “السعر قرار وليس ردّة فعل.”

وأضافت أنني أفضل الانسحاب من أي صفقة يقتصر النقاش فيها على السعر، لأن هذا النوع من العملاء نادرًا ما يبني قيمة طويلة الأمد للمؤسسة. كما أن ربط حوافز فرق المبيعات بالربحية التي يحققها العميل، وليس بمجرد إغلاق الصفقة، يدفعهم إلى التفكير بمنطق مختلف... شرط أن يمتلكوا منذ البداية معايير واضحة لقياس العائد على الاستثمار (ROI) تساعدهم على اتخاذ القرار الصحيح.

هذه القناعة لم تأتِ من النظريات. بل من أكثر من خمسة وعشرين عامًا قضيتها داخل القطاع المصرفي اللبناني، حيث رأيت كيف يمكن لقرار بسيط يتعلق بالسعر أن يؤثر في مستقبل العلاقة مع العميل، وربحية المؤسسة، وحتى مكانتها في السوق.

لماذا تتنافس المؤسسات الذكية على السعر؟

في معظم الحالات، لا تكون المنافسة على السعر خيارًا استراتيجيًا بل تكون مؤشرًا على وجود مشكلة أعمق. قد تكون المؤسسة لم تحدد بوضوح القيمة التي تقدمها. أو أن فرق المبيعات لا تدرك فعليًا ما الذي يميز المؤسسة عن منافسيها. أو أن نظام الحوافز يكافئ عدد الصفقات، لا جودة العملاء. في القطاع المصرفي اللبناني، رأيت هذا المشهد يتكرر سنوات طويلة. تفوز مؤسسة بعميل كبير لأنها قدمت سعرًا أفضل أو شروطًا أكثر مرونة. لكنها في الحقيقة لم تربح علاقة. لقد ربحت صفقة فقط. والأخطر من ذلك أنها أرسلت رسالة غير مباشرة إلى العميل مفادها أن السعر هو العامل الوحيد الذي يمكن التفاوض عليه. ومن الصعب جدًا تغيير هذا الانطباع لاحقًا.

وينطبق الأمر نفسه على كثير من الأسواق العربية. ففي لبنان والخليج والأردن ومصر، كثيرًا ما تختلط علينا العلاقة الشخصية بالولاء الحقيقي. لكن العميل الذي يبقى بسبب العلاقة وحدها يختلف تمامًا عن العميل الذي يبقى لأنك قدمت له أقل سعر. الأول يمكن بناء شراكة طويلة معه. أما الثاني فسيرحل بمجرد أن يحصل على عرض أفضل.

كيف غيّر الذكاء الاصطناعي هذه المعادلة؟

تحدثت في مقال سابق عن أن الذكاء الاصطناعي يخفض تكلفة القدرات التنافسية. واليوم أصبحت الأدوات التي كانت تحتاج إلى استثمارات ضخمة متاحة لمعظم المؤسسات. وهذا يعني أن الميزة لم تعد في امتلاك التكنولوجيا وحدها. بل في القدرة على استخدامها لبناء قيمة يصعب تقليدها. وأصبحت عناصر مثل فهم العميل، وجودة العلاقة، وسرعة اتخاذ القرار، ووضوح عرض القيمة، أهم بكثير من القدرة على تقديم خصم إضافي.

لماذا يجب ربط الحوافز بالربحية؟

من أكثر الأفكار التي أؤمن بها أن طريقة قياس أداء فرق المبيعات تحدد سلوكها. إذا كانت المكافآت مرتبطة بعدد الصفقات، فسيركز الجميع على الإغلاق بأي ثمن. أما إذا أصبحت مرتبطة بربحية العميل واستمرارية العلاقة، فسيتغير أسلوب التفكير بالكامل. لن يعود السؤال: “كيف أغلق الصفقة؟” بل سيصبح: “هل هذا العميل سيضيف قيمة حقيقية للمؤسسة خلال السنوات المقبلة؟” لكن هذا التحول لا ينجح بمجرد تغيير نظام المكافآت. فالموظف يحتاج إلى أدوات تساعده على اتخاذ القرار الصحيح. وهنا تأتي أهمية وجود معايير واضحة لقياس العائد على الاستثمار. ليست كإجراء بيروقراطي، بل كأداة تمنحه الثقة لرفض الفرص التي لا تحقق القيمة المطلوبة، حتى عندما يكون صاحبها عميلًا تربطه به علاقة شخصية.

وفي ثقافة الأعمال العربية، حيث تلعب العلاقات دورًا محوريًا، تصبح هذه المعايير أكثر أهمية. فهي تنقل قرار الرفض من كونه موقفًا شخصيًا إلى كونه قرارًا مؤسسيًا يستند إلى أسس واضحة.

ماذا أضاف الذكاء الاصطناعي؟

قبل سنوات قليلة، كانت عملية تقييم ربحية العميل تتطلب تحليلات معقدة تستغرق وقتًا طويلًا. أما اليوم، فأصبح الذكاء الاصطناعي قادرًا على تحليل البيانات السلوكية، وسجل التعاملات، واحتمالات الاستمرار، وفرص البيع الإضافي، واحتمالات فقدان العميل، خلال وقت قصير جدًا. وهذا لا يغير المبدأ الأساسي. السعر يبقى قرارًا، وليس ردّة فعل. لكن الذكاء الاصطناعي يجعل هذا القرار أكثر دقة، وأكثر سرعة، وأكثر استنادًا إلى البيانات.

القيمة هي أفضل استراتيجية تسعير

أعتقد أن المؤسسات العربية، وهي تعيد اليوم بناء نماذجها التجارية في ظل ضغوط اقتصادية متزايدة، تملك فرصة حقيقية للانتقال من المنافسة على السعر إلى المنافسة على القيمة. ويتحقق ذلك عبر ثلاثة عناصر متكاملة:

- عرض قيمة واضح يصعب تقليده.

- نظام حوافز يكافئ الربحية لا حجم المبيعات فقط.

- استخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي لدعم القرارات التجارية بالبيانات والتحليلات.

فالمؤسسة التي تعرف قيمة ما تقدمه، لا تحتاج إلى أن تجعل السعر وسيلتها الوحيدة للمنافسة.

وفي النهاية، يبقى السعر رقمًا.

أما القيمة فهي ما يجعل العميل يختارك حتى عندما لا تكون الأرخص.

^{لماذا سيصبح «الذكاء الموثوق» الميزة التنافسية الأهم للمؤسسات في عصر الذكاء الاصطناعي؟}

على مدى السنوات الأخيرة، انحصر الحديث عن الذكاء الاصطناعي في مفهوم واحد يكاد يتكرر في كل اجتماع لمجلس إدارة، وكل مؤتمر اقتصادي، وكل نقاش حول مستقبل المؤسسات:

كيف يمكن للذكاء الاصطناعي أن يجعلنا أكثر كفاءة؟

وبصفتي خبيرة الذكاء الاصطناعي في لبنان والشرق الأوسط، أعمل مع مؤسسات مالية، وشركات خاصة، وجهات حكومية في مختلف أنحاء المنطقة، أسمع هذا السؤال باستمرار.

ولا أستغرب ذلك.

فالكفاءة مفهوم يسهل قياسه، ويمكن تحويله إلى أرقام ومؤشرات أداء، كما يمنح القيادات التنفيذية شعورًا بأن الذكاء الاصطناعي مجرد تقنية جديدة يمكن إضافتها إلى الأنظمة القائمة دون الحاجة إلى إعادة التفكير في نموذج العمل نفسه.

لكن الحقيقة أعمق من ذلك بكثير.

فالذكاء الاصطناعي لا يعيد فقط تحسين أداء المؤسسات...

إنه يعيد تشكيل الاقتصاد الذي تعمل داخله تلك المؤسسات.

لسنوات طويلة، اعتقدنا أن الميزة التنافسية تُبنى من خلال امتلاك أفضل المنتجات، أو أكبر شبكة توزيع، أو أعلى قدرة إنتاجية، أو أقوى حضور في السوق.

أما اليوم، فقد بدأت قواعد المنافسة تتغير.

فالمؤسسات التي ستقود العقد القادم قد لا تكون تلك التي تمتلك أفضل منتج، ولا حتى أكبر بنية تحتية، بل تلك التي تستطيع التأثير في البيئة التي تُصنع داخلها قرارات العملاء، قبل أن يتخذوا هذه القرارات أصلًا.

وهنا يكمن التحول الحقيقي.

لم تعد المنافسة تدور فقط حول ما تبيعه المؤسسة...

بل أصبحت تدور حول قدرتها على بناء الثقة، وتوجيه الإدراك، وصناعة السياق الذي تتشكل داخله القرارات.

ولهذا أعتقد أن الاقتصاد الجديد لن يكافئ الذكاء الاصطناعي وحده.

بل سيكافئ ما أسميه «الذكاء الموثوق» (Trusted Intelligence).

^{كيف تغيّر الذكاء الاصطناعي مفهوم الميزة التنافسية؟}

على امتداد عقود، قامت المنافسة بين المؤسسات على معادلة واضحة.

الإنتاج بكفاءة أعلى.

التوسع في الأسواق.

تعزيز شبكات التوزيع.

التسويق بصورة أفضل.

ثم تحقيق وفورات الحجم التي تمنح المؤسسات الكبرى تفوقًا يصعب منافسته.

وحتى مع ظهور الاقتصاد الرقمي، بقيت هذه المعادلة قائمة إلى حد بعيد.

فالتحول الرقمي جعل العمليات أسرع، والبيانات أكثر توافرًا، والتواصل أكثر سهولة، لكنه لم يغيّر بصورة جذرية الطريقة التي تُخلق بها القيمة الاقتصادية.

أما الذكاء الاصطناعي، فيختلف جذريًا عن كل ما سبقه.

فهو لا يغيّر فقط ما تقوم به المؤسسة.

بل يغيّر الطريقة التي يفكر بها العميل.

ويعيد تشكيل كيفية ترتيب الأولويات.

ويبني الثقة أو يهدمها.

ويؤثر في قرارات الشراء والاستثمار والتفاعل قبل أن يدرك الإنسان نفسه كيف تكوّنت قناعته.

أصبحت محركات التوصية تتوقع احتياجات المستخدم قبل أن يعبّر عنها.

وأصبحت الأنظمة الذكية تحدد توقيت الرسالة المناسبة، والشخص المناسب، والقناة المناسبة، بل وحتى الصياغة الأكثر تأثيرًا لكل حالة على حدة.

وفي كل ثانية، تعمل الخوارزميات على تشكيل ما نقرأه، وما نشاهده، وما نثق به، وما نشتريه، وحتى الطريقة التي نستجيب بها عاطفيًا للمعلومات.

وغالبًا ما يحدث كل ذلك قبل أن ندرك أن البيئة المعلوماتية المحيطة بنا قد أُعيد تشكيلها بالكامل بواسطة أنظمة ذكية.

لهذا السبب، لا أرى أن الذكاء الاصطناعي مجرد طبقة تقنية جديدة تُضاف إلى الأنظمة القائمة.

بل أراه يتحول تدريجيًا إلى بنية تحتية للتأثير داخل الاقتصاد نفسه.

وفي هذه البيئة الجديدة، لم تعد القيمة الحقيقية تكمن فقط في المنتج أو الخدمة.

بل أصبحت تكمن في القدرة على تشكيل السياق الذي تُبنى داخله القرارات.

وهذا يمثل شكلًا جديدًا من القوة الاقتصادية لم تعرفه المؤسسات من قبل.

^{ماذا يعني ذلك للمؤسسات في لبنان والشرق الأوسط؟}

هذا التحول لم يعد مجرد توقعات مستقبلية.

إنه يحدث اليوم أمامنا.

وأراه بوضوح في عملي مع المؤسسات في لبنان ودول الخليج العربي وبقية الشرق الأوسط.

فالقطاع المصرفي، على سبيل المثال، اعتاد لعقود أن يقيس قوته بعدد الفروع، وحجم الميزانية، وتنوع المنتجات، وحجم العمليات.

ولا تزال هذه العناصر مهمة.

لكنها لم تعد وحدها كافية لبناء ميزة تنافسية مستدامة.

لقد بدأت المؤسسات التي تحقق تقدمًا حقيقيًا تعتمد على شيء مختلف تمامًا...

قدرتها على فهم السلوك الإنساني.

فالنجاح لم يعد مرتبطًا فقط بتقديم خدمة مصرفية جيدة.

بل أصبح مرتبطًا بفهم قلق العميل، وتوقع احتياجاته، وتحليل سلوكه المالي، واستيعاب توقيت قراراته، ثم تقديم التوصية المناسبة في اللحظة المناسبة.

وفي هذا الاقتصاد الجديد، لم يعد التفوق حكرًا على المؤسسة الأكبر حجمًا.

بل أصبح من نصيب المؤسسة الأكثر قدرة على قراءة الإنسان.

But it also risks underestimating the much larger transition now unfolding beneath the surface of the global economy. AI is not simply optimizing existing business models. It is progressively reshaping how influence itself is constructed, distributed, and monetized.

The companies that will ultimately define the next decade will not necessarily be the ones producing the best products, owning the largest infrastructures, or controlling the widest distribution channels. Increasingly, strategic advantage is shifting toward institutions capable of shaping the environments within which decisions are formed, long before those decisions are consciously finalized.

The future AI economy will not reward intelligence alone. It will reward trusted intelligence.

How has competitive positioning changed in an AI era?

Historically, competitive dominance was built through scale. Your institution produced efficiently, distributed aggressively, marketed persuasively, and optimized performance faster than competitors. Even the digital era, despite fundamentally transforming industries, largely accelerated this familiar logic by making systems faster, more connected, and more accessible without necessarily altering the underlying architecture of value creation itself.

AI changes that equation because it does not merely influence what your company does. It increasingly influences how your customers think, prioritize, trust, consume, and financially commit inside environments already mediated by intelligent systems.

Recommendation engines now anticipate intent before it is fully articulated. Predictive interfaces personalize timing, visibility, communication, and engagement simultaneously. Algorithms continuously shape what individuals read, purchase, trust, and emotionally respond to, often long before they recognize how extensively their informational environment has already been structured around them.

This is why AI should not be interpreted merely as another technological layer integrated into existing operations. It is gradually becoming an influence infrastructure embedded directly into the economic system itself. Value no longer resides exclusively in the product being sold. Increasingly, value resides in the ability to shape the contextual environment surrounding the decision itself. That is a fundamentally different form of economic power.

What does this mean for financial institutions in the Arab region?

This transformation is already highly visible in financial services, and it is something I see directly in my work with Arab region institutions from Lebanon to the Gulf.

Banks across Lebanon and the Gulf historically competed through branch networks, balance sheet strength, transactional scale, and product diversification. While these factors remain relevant, they no longer fully determine strategic advantage inside an intelligence driven economy.

The institutions beginning to separate themselves are not simply offering financial products more efficiently. They are developing behavioral visibility to interpret customer anxiety, timing sensitivity, spending psychology, risk perception, and financial intent in increasingly predictive ways. In this environment, competitive advantage no longer belongs exclusively to the institution with the largest infrastructure, but increasingly to the institution capable of understanding behavioral context with the highest degree of intelligence.

Retail reflects the same transition. For decades, retail competition centered around inventory management, pricing strategy, location optimization, and distribution efficiency. Today, intelligent systems are reshaping influence much earlier in the decision cycle itself, controlling product discovery, recommendation sequencing, emotional engagement, urgency formation, and consumer trust before purchasing decisions fully materialize. The transaction simply becomes the visible endpoint of a much larger intelligence process operating continuously in the background.

Why does this require a genuine mindset shift for Arab leaders?

Strategic value increasingly emerges not from isolated products alone, but from the ability to observe, interpret, and influence behavioral patterns across interconnected environments at scale.

Yet many institutions continue evaluating AI primarily through operational metrics: automation rates, cost optimization, processing speed, or workforce efficiency. While these indicators may demonstrate short term performance gains, they often fail to capture the far more consequential transformation unfolding beneath the operational layer.

The more important question is whether your institution is treating AI as a tactical overlay or as a structural redesign of how influence, visibility, trust, and decision making operate across the whole organization.

As synthetic information environments continue expanding, consumers will increasingly question not only the quality of the decisions they make, but the degree to which those decisions were independently formed at all. In highly mediated environments saturated by synthetic content and informational overload, trust may quietly become one of the most valuable strategic assets your institution possesses.

This is why governance, transparency, and credibility are no longer peripheral ethical discussions. They are becoming core competitive variables within the AI economy itself. Institutions capable of combining predictive intelligence with governance discipline, transparency, and long term credibility may ultimately establish far more durable influence than companies optimizing purely for engagement or behavioral manipulation.

كيف يمكننا استخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي لزيادة الكفاءة؟

أفهم تمامًا لماذا يُطرح هذا السؤال.

فالكفاءة سهلة القياس، ويمكن عرض نتائجها في تقرير لمجلس الإدارة، كما تمنح المؤسسات طريقة مريحة للحديث عن الذكاء الاصطناعي دون الحاجة إلى إعادة التفكير في نموذج أعمالها أو طريقة عملها.

لكن الحقيقة هي أن هذا السؤال لم يعد السؤال الصحيح.

فالذكاء الاصطناعي ليس مجرد تقنية لأتمتة العمليات أو تقليل التكاليف، بل هو قوة اقتصادية واستراتيجية تعيد تشكيل الطريقة التي تُنشأ بها القيمة، وتُدار، وتُحافظ عليها المؤسسات.

وبينما تنشغل كثير من الشركات بتحسين العمليات الحالية، يعمل الذكاء الاصطناعي بصمت على تغيير المنطق الذي بُنيت عليه تلك العمليات منذ البداية.

لقد اعتادت المؤسسات، لعقود طويلة، العمل ضمن سلسلة قيمة تقليدية تبدأ بتطوير المنتج، ثم تسويقه، ثم توزيعه، ثم بيعه، مع اعتبار أن النمو يتحقق من خلال التوسع وزيادة الحصة السوقية وتحسين الكفاءة التشغيلية.

أما اليوم، فلم يعد الذكاء الاصطناعي يسرّع هذه السلسلة فحسب...

بل يعيد تعريفها بالكامل.

فنحن ننتقل تدريجيًا إلى نموذج اقتصادي جديد، تصبح فيه القيمة الحقيقية أقل ارتباطًا بالمنتج نفسه، وأكثر ارتباطًا بقدرة المؤسسة على فهم البيانات، واستشراف ما سيحدث لاحقًا، واتخاذ القرار المناسب قبل أن يعبّر العميل أصلًا عن احتياجه.

وهنا يبدأ الفارق الحقيقي بين المؤسسات.

فالمؤسسة التي تتعامل مع الذكاء الاصطناعي باعتباره أداة، تعمل على تحسين أدائها الحالي.

أما المؤسسة التي تتعامل معه باعتباره بنية تحتية استراتيجية، فهي تعيد رسم حدود السوق الذي تعمل فيه.

كيف يبدو هذا التحول داخل المؤسسات العربية؟

هذا التحول لم يعد مجرد تصور نظري.

إنه يحدث اليوم أمامنا، من بيروت إلى الرياض، ومن القاهرة إلى مختلف أسواق المنطقة العربية.

في القطاع المصرفي، لم تعد القيمة الحقيقية تتمثل في الحسابات أو المعاملات المالية بحد ذاتها.

بل أصبحت تكمن في قدرة المؤسسة على فهم سلوك العميل، وتوقع احتياجاته، وتقديم القرار المناسب في اللحظة المناسبة.

وخلال أكثر من خمسة وعشرين عامًا أمضيتها في القطاع المصرفي اللبناني قبل التفرغ للاستشارات في الذكاء الاصطناعي، رأيت كيف بدأ حجم المؤسسة يفقد أهميته تدريجيًا، بينما أصبحت جودة الفهم والقدرة على اتخاذ القرار المبني على البيانات هي العامل الأكثر تأثيرًا في بناء الميزة التنافسية.

وفي قطاع التجزئة، لم يعد المنتج هو محور عملية البيع.

بل أصبحت القيمة الحقيقية تكمن في القدرة على توقع نية العميل، وتخصيص تجربته، والتأثير في رحلته الشرائية قبل أن يصل أصلًا إلى قرار الشراء.

أما في التعليم، فإن المحتوى الموحد الذي يتلقاه الجميع بالطريقة نفسها بدأ يفقد مكانته لصالح أنظمة تعليمية ذكية تتكيف مع احتياجات كل متعلم، وسرعته، وأسلوب تعلمه.

ورغم اختلاف هذه القطاعات، فإنها تشترك جميعًا في حقيقة واحدة.

لقد بدأ الذكاء الاصطناعي ينقل المؤسسات من نماذج تعتمد على تنفيذ المعاملات إلى نماذج تعتمد على فهم السلوك البشري.

وأصبح مصدر الإيرادات لا يقتصر على بيع منتج أو تقديم خدمة، بل يعتمد بصورة متزايدة على قدرة المؤسسة على تفسير السلوك الإنساني، والتنبؤ به، والاستجابة له بدقة عالية.

وهذا التحول يقلب واحدة من أكثر المسلمات رسوخًا في عالم الأعمال...

وهي أن الحجم هو مصدر القيمة.

في اقتصاد يقوده الذكاء الاصطناعي، أصبحت الدقة في كثير من الأحيان أكثر قيمة من الحجم.

فعدد محدود من التفاعلات الذكية والشخصية قد يحقق نموًا أكثر استدامة من حملات جماهيرية واسعة لا تراعي اختلاف احتياجات العملاء.

ولهذا ستتجه المؤسسات الرائدة تدريجيًا بعيدًا عن التقسيمات التقليدية للأسواق، نحو نماذج تعتمد على خلق قيمة مستمرة، وشخصية، ومتجددة لكل عميل.

As an AI expert working with institutions across Lebanon and the Arab region, I hear the same question in almost every meeting. How can we use artificial intelligence to become more efficient. I understand why people ask it. Efficiency is measurable, it is easy to put in a board deck, and it gives everyone a comfortable way to talk about AI without rethinking anything fundamental.

It is also the wrong question.

AI is not a tool for automation. It is a structural force that is reshaping how value gets created, captured, and sustained across entire industries. While most businesses are busy optimizing the processes they already have, AI is quietly dismantling the logic those processes were built on in the first place.

For decades, companies operated inside linear value chains. You developed a product, you marketed it, you distributed it, you sold it, and growth came from scale, segmentation, and small efficiency gains layered on top of a system that did not fundamentally change. AI does not simply speed that system up. It redefines it.

What is emerging instead is something closer to a living, intelligence driven ecosystem, where value no longer sits inside the product itself. It sits in the continuous ability to interpret data, anticipate what comes next, and act on that understanding before a customer has fully articulated what they want.

A company that treats AI as a tool is optimizing its existing performance. A company that treats AI as infrastructure is redefining its market.

What does this shift actually look like inside Arab institutions?

I see this shift everywhere I look across the region, from Beirut to Riyadh to Cairo.

In banking, value is moving beyond the account and the transaction. The institutions pulling ahead across Lebanon and the Gulf are not the ones with the largest balance sheets. They are the ones that understand behavior, anticipate need, and deliver a contextual decision in real time. Intelligence depth is starting to matter more than size, something I saw firsthand across twenty five years inside Lebanese banking before I moved into AI advisory work full time.

In retail, the product itself is no longer the center of the sale. The real value lies in predicting intent, personalizing the experience, and shaping the customer’s journey before the purchase ever happens.

In education, static content is fading. Adaptive systems are turning learning into something that responds to each individual student rather than delivering the same material to everyone at the same pace.

Underneath all three examples is the same deeper truth. AI is moving businesses from transactional models to behavioral ones. Revenue increasingly comes not from the simple exchange of goods, but from an institution’s ability to model, understand, and respond to human behavior with real precision. This quietly overturns an assumption most of us grew up with in business, which is that scale is the primary driver of value.

In an AI driven economy, precision tends to outperform scale. A handful of high value, deeply contextual interactions can create more durable growth than a much larger mass market approach ever could. The organizations that understand this will move away from broad segmentation and toward something closer to continuous, personalized value creation.

Where most AI strategies fall short

This is exactly where I see most AI strategies fall short, including some very well funded ones.

Too often, AI gets deployed as a layer placed on top of systems that never change underneath it. Leadership invests in tools and platforms while leaving the underlying business model exactly as it was, and the result is incremental improvement rather than real transformation. The distinction matters more than it sounds. A company that treats AI as a tool is optimizing its existing performance. A company that treats AI as infrastructure is redefining its market.

This shift is not abstract. Treating AI as infrastructure requires rethinking how an organization actually functions, starting with the operating model itself. AI cannot stay confined to one department or one isolated use case. It has to become the connective layer that decisions flow through. Workflows that used to be static and function based give way to dynamic systems where marketing, risk, operations, and customer experience are all continuously informed by the same shared intelligence.

Data has to change role too, moving from a byproduct of operations to a genuine strategic asset. The advantage is no longer in how much data you have accumulated. It is in how well you can structure and activate that data in real time, across the whole enterprise, rather than leaving it scattered across departments that never speak to each other.

Decision making itself shifts as well. The old hierarchical process, where decisions move slowly up and down a chain of approval, gives way to something more distributed and adaptive, where intelligence is embedded directly into daily operations. Leadership’s role becomes less about making every decision and more about setting the direction and the boundaries within which AI can act, optimize, and scale decisions on its own.

That changes what capability actually means inside an organization. It is not simply about hiring a few technical specialists and adding them to the margins of an existing team. It is about building an organization that can operate fluently inside an intelligence driven environment, where domain knowledge and data fluency converge, and where leaders engage with AI not as a tool sitting beside them, but as a system that genuinely shapes outcomes.

And eventually, the business model itself has to be reconsidered. As AI becomes infrastructure rather than an addition, value moves away from discrete products and toward continuous, predictive, personalized service. Revenue stops being tied solely to individual transactions and becomes tied to an ongoing intelligence that anticipates needs, influences behavior, and delivers outcomes as they happen rather than after the fact.

Why this matters for boards across the Arab region right now

This is where the real divide is forming, and I think most boards across Lebanon, the Gulf, and the wider Arab region have not yet had this conversation honestly.

Organizations that simply layer AI onto their existing model will become more efficient. Organizations that rebuild around it will become something fundamentally different.

The question worth asking in your next strategy meeting is not where AI fits inside your current model. It is whether your current model remains viable at all in a world where intelligence is continuous, adaptive, and embedded into every interaction you have with a customer or a citizen. Efficiency is only the surface. The deeper transformation is the reconfiguration of value itself.

For leaders and board members reading this, the real question is whether your firm’s operating model, governance, and incentives are actually built for an economy where intelligence anchors competitive advantage. Leaders who keep AI confined to the IT roadmap will manage cost. Leaders who embed it into strategy, capital allocation, and risk oversight will move markets.

عندما تبدأ المؤسسات في لبنان والمنطقة العربية رحلتها نحو الذكاء الاصطناعي، ألاحظ خطأً يتكرر بصورة تكاد تكون ثابتة.

فأول سؤال يُطرح غالبًا هو:

هل نمتلك البنية التحتية المناسبة؟

وهل ميزانيتنا كافية؟

وهل اخترنا المنصة أو الأداة الصحيحة؟

جميعها أسئلة مشروعة...

لكنها ليست الأسئلة التي ينبغي أن نبدأ بها.

فبعد سنوات من العمل مع مؤسسات مالية، وشركات، وجهات حكومية في لبنان والمنطقة العربية، أصبحت مقتنعة بأن جاهزية المؤسسة للذكاء الاصطناعي لا تُقاس بالتكنولوجيا التي تمتلكها، بل بقدرتها على استخدامها بطريقة تُحدث أثرًا حقيقيًا.

وهناك فرق كبير بين مؤسسة جاهزة لاستخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي، ومؤسسة جاهزة فقط للإنفاق عليه.

للأسف، كثير من المؤسسات لا تكتشف هذا الفرق إلا بعد استثمار ملايين الدولارات في مشاريع لم تحقق النتائج المرجوة.

ولهذا طورت إطارًا عمليًا أستخدمه عند تقييم جاهزية المؤسسات قبل إطلاق أي مبادرة للذكاء الاصطناعي.

ويتكون هذا الإطار من خمسة أبعاد رئيسية.

والمثير للاهتمام أن أياً منها لا يبدأ بالتكنولوجيا.

فالجاهزية الحقيقية للذكاء الاصطناعي ليست سؤالًا تقنيًا.

إنها سؤال يتعلق بالقيادة...

ثم بالبيانات...

ثم بالحوكمة...

ثم بالقدرات البشرية...

وأخيرًا بثقافة المؤسسة.

وبهذا الترتيب تحديدًا.

^{ما هي الأبعاد الخمسة لجاهزية الذكاء الاصطناعي؟}

^{أولًا: الوضوح الاستراتيجي}

لا تصبح المؤسسة جاهزة للذكاء الاصطناعي لمجرد إعلان رغبتها في الابتكار أو التحول الرقمي.

بل تصبح جاهزة عندما تستطيع تحديد المشكلة التي تريد حلها بدقة.

فبدلًا من القول:

“نريد الاستفادة من الذكاء الاصطناعي.”

يجب أن يكون الهدف أكثر تحديدًا، مثل:

“نريد تقليص مدة الموافقة على تمويل الشركات الصغيرة والمتوسطة من خمسة أيام إلى يوم واحد، مع الحفاظ على معايير إدارة المخاطر الحالية.”

قد يبدو الفرق بسيطًا.

لكنه في الواقع هو الفارق بين مشروع يحقق قيمة حقيقية، وآخر يبدأ بحماس كبير ثم ينتهي دون أثر ملموس.

فالذكاء الاصطناعي، عندما لا يرتبط بمشكلة واضحة، يتحول إلى حل يبحث عن مشكلة.

وهذه هي نقطة البداية لمعظم المشاريع التي تفشل.

^{ثانيًا: هندسة البيانات}

كثير من المؤسسات تفتخر بأنها تمتلك كميات هائلة من البيانات.

لكن امتلاك البيانات لا يعني بالضرورة الجاهزية.

السؤال الحقيقي هو:

هل هذه البيانات مترابطة؟

هل يمكن الوصول إليها بسهولة؟

وهل تتدفق بين الإدارات المختلفة، أم أنها ما تزال محجوزة داخل جزر تنظيمية لا تتواصل مع بعضها؟

من خلال عملي مع مؤسسات في لبنان ودول الخليج، أجد أن تشتت البيانات هو السبب الأكثر شيوعًا لتعثر مشاريع الذكاء الاصطناعي بعد نجاحها الأولي.

فقد تمتلك المؤسسة ملايين السجلات...

لكنها تظل غير قادرة على الاستفادة منها إذا كانت البيانات غير منظمة، أو غير محدثة، أو غير قابلة للاستخدام الفوري.

الميزة التنافسية لم تعد في كمية البيانات.

بل في جودة تنظيمها، وقدرة المؤسسة على تحويلها إلى قرارات لحظية.

^{ثالثًا: نضج الحوكمة}

قبل أن تعتمد أي مؤسسة الذكاء الاصطناعي على نطاق واسع، يجب أن تكون لديها إجابات واضحة عن مجموعة من الأسئلة التي لا تزال غائبة عن كثير من مجالس الإدارة.

من المسؤول إذا اتخذ نظام ذكاء اصطناعي قرارًا خاطئًا؟

كيف يمكن مراجعة أو تدقيق القرارات التي تتخذها الخوارزميات؟

ما الحدود الأخلاقية التي يجب ألا يتجاوزها النظام؟

ومن الجهة المخولة بفرض هذه الضوابط؟

في المنطقة العربية، حيث ما تزال الأطر التنظيمية الخاصة بالذكاء الاصطناعي في مرحلة التطور، أصبحت الحوكمة العامل الذي يميز المؤسسات القادرة على التوسع بثقة، عن تلك التي تخلق مخاطر قانونية وتشغيلية وهي تعتقد أنها تخلق قيمة.

^{رابعًا: الجاهزية البشرية}

كثيرون يعتقدون أن بناء فريق من علماء البيانات يكفي لنجاح أي مشروع للذكاء الاصطناعي.

لكن الواقع مختلف.

فالنجاح يعتمد قبل كل شيء على الأشخاص الذين سيتعاملون مع مخرجات الذكاء الاصطناعي يوميًا.

هل يستطيع المدير تفسير النتائج؟

هل يعرف متى يثق بها، ومتى يشكك فيها؟

هل يمتلك القادة القدرة على اتخاذ قرارات تعتمد على الذكاء الاصطناعي دون الاعتماد عليه بصورة عمياء؟

أكثر فجوة ألاحظها داخل المؤسسات ليست نقص الخبراء التقنيين.

بل نقص الثقافة والمعرفة بالذكاء الاصطناعي لدى القيادات التنفيذية والإدارة الوسطى.

وهؤلاء هم الذين يحددون في النهاية نجاح المشروع أو فشله.

^{خامسًا: الجاهزية الثقافية}

وهذا هو البعد الأكثر صعوبة في القياس...

والأكثر تجاهلًا.

فالذكاء الاصطناعي لا يغيّر العمليات فقط.

بل يغيّر طريقة اتخاذ القرار.

ويعيد توزيع الصلاحيات.

ويغيّر مفهوم المساءلة.

ويفرض أساليب جديدة لقياس الأداء.

ولهذا نجد أن المؤسسات ذات الهياكل الجامدة غالبًا ما تقاوم الذكاء الاصطناعي، ليس لأنها تفتقر إلى التكنولوجيا، بل لأنها تدرك أن نجاحه يتطلب تغييرًا في طريقة إدارتها نفسها.

وفي النهاية، تصبح الثقافة المؤسسية هي العامل الذي يحدد ما إذا كانت المؤسسة ستنظر إلى الذكاء الاصطناعي باعتباره تهديدًا يجب السيطرة عليه...

أم فرصة يجب البناء عليها.

^{كيف تستخدم المؤسسات هذا الإطار؟}

لا أنظر إلى هذه الأبعاد الخمسة باعتبارها قائمة تحقق يجب إنهاؤها قبل البدء.

بل أعتبرها أداة تشخيص.

فالهدف ليس أن تحقق المؤسسة أعلى تقييم في كل محور.

بل أن تمتلك صورة واقعية عن نقاط القوة ونقاط الضعف لديها.

قد تكون المؤسسة قوية في الوضوح الاستراتيجي، لكنها ضعيفة في الحوكمة.

وفي هذه الحالة، فإن الإسراع في تطبيق الذكاء الاصطناعي سيزيد من المخاطر أكثر مما يخلق قيمة.

وقد تكون مؤسسة أخرى تمتلك ثقافة تنظيمية جيدة، لكنها تعاني من بيانات مجزأة.

وهنا يكون الاستثمار في بنية البيانات أكثر أهمية من شراء أحدث أدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي.

فالترتيب مهم.

وتسلسل الخطوات مهم.

لكن الأهم من ذلك كله هو الصدق في تقييم الواقع.

لأن الاستراتيجية الناجحة لا تبدأ من الصورة التي نرغب في الوصول إليها...

بل من الواقع الذي نقف فيه اليوم.

في رأيي، فإن جاهزية المؤسسات للذكاء الاصطناعي لن تُقاس مستقبلًا بعدد النماذج التي تستخدمها، ولا بحجم استثماراتها التقنية، بل بقدرتها على القيادة الرشيدة، وحوكمة البيانات، وبناء ثقافة مؤسسية تجعل الذكاء الاصطناعي جزءًا من طريقة التفكير، لا مجرد أداة جديدة داخل بيئة العمل.

One of the most common mistakes I see when Arab institutions begin their AI journey is treating readiness as a technology question. They ask whether the infrastructure is sufficient, whether the budget is adequate, whether the right tools are in place. These are real questions, but they are not the right starting point.

As an AI expert working across Lebanon and the Arab region, I have developed a framework over years of advisory work that I use to assess whether an institution is genuinely ready to benefit from AI, or whether it is simply ready to spend on it. There is a significant difference between the two, and I want to make it visible here.

The framework has five dimensions. None of them is primarily technical.

AI readiness is not a technology question. It is a leadership question, a data question, a governance question, a people question, and a culture question — in that order.

What are the five dimensions of AI readiness?

The first dimension is strategic clarity. An institution is only ready for AI when it can articulate, precisely and without ambiguity, what problem it is trying to solve. Not ‘we want to be more innovative’ or ‘we want to leverage AI.’ Something specific: we want to reduce credit approval time for SME clients from five days to one, while maintaining our current risk standards. Strategic clarity is the foundation because AI without a clear problem to solve becomes a solution looking for an application, which is how most failed implementations begin.

The second dimension is data architecture. This does not mean having a lot of data. It means having data that is structured, connected, and accessible across the organization rather than locked in departmental silos that never communicate. In my experience across Lebanon and the wider Arab region, data silos are the single most common reason AI projects stall after a promising pilot. An institution can have extraordinary volumes of data and still be functionally unready for AI if that data cannot be activated in real time and at scale.

The third dimension is governance maturity. Before deploying AI at any meaningful scale, an institution needs clear answers to questions most boards have not yet formally addressed. Who owns an AI decision when something goes wrong? How does the institution audit an algorithmic outcome? What are the ethical boundaries the system must operate within, and who enforces them? In the Arab region, where regulatory frameworks for AI are still developing across Lebanon, the Gulf, and Egypt, governance maturity is often the dimension that separates institutions that scale AI responsibly from those that create liability while thinking they are creating value.

The fourth dimension is human capability. This is not about hiring data scientists, although that may eventually be necessary. It is about whether the people who will use AI outputs, interpret them, challenge them, and act on them have the fluency to do so with confidence. A well designed AI system inside an institution with low AI literacy will be ignored, overridden, or misused. The gap I see most frequently across Lebanese and Gulf institutions is not technical capability at the specialist level. It is the absence of AI literacy at the leadership and middle management level, the people whose buy in determines whether a deployment actually changes how the institution operates.

The fifth dimension is cultural readiness. This is the hardest to measure and the easiest to underestimate. AI changes how decisions get made, which means it changes who has authority, where accountability sits, and how performance gets evaluated. Organizations with rigid hierarchies and low tolerance for uncertainty tend to resist AI adoption not because they lack technology but because the technology, if implemented properly, would require them to change how they are structured and governed. Cultural readiness is the dimension that often determines whether an institution treats AI as a threat to manage or an opportunity to build around.

How should Arab institutions use this framework?

I use these five dimensions as a diagnostic, not a checklist. No institution will be equally strong across all five before it begins. The point is not to achieve perfection across every dimension before taking any action. The point is to know honestly where the gaps are, so that the AI strategy addresses the real constraints rather than the comfortable ones.

An institution that scores strongly on strategic clarity and data architecture but weakly on governance maturity should not be accelerating its AI deployment. It should be building its governance structures first, because the deployment will create risks the institution is not yet equipped to manage.

An institution that has strong governance and cultural readiness but fragmented data will benefit from investing in data infrastructure before selecting AI tools, because the tools will only be as effective as the data they operate on.

The order matters. The sequence matters. And the honest assessment of where you actually are, rather than where you would like to be, is the beginning of a strategy that will hold.

لا يثير اهتمامي الذكاء الاصطناعي بوصفه ظاهرة تستحق الانبهار، بل يهمني كيف يمكن للمؤسسات أن تستخدمه بمسؤولية، وكيف يمكن لمجالس الإدارة، والوزارات، والمصارف، والشركات العائلية في لبنان والمنطقة العربية أن تتخذ قرارات أفضل في عصر أصبحت فيه المعرفة متاحة للجميع، بينما أصبحت الحقيقة أكثر صعوبة في التحقق.

ماذا تكتب خبيرة ذكاء اصطناعي في المنطقة العربية؟

في مقالاتي الأخيرة في Forbes، بدأت في صياغة فكرة أؤمن بأنها ستكون من أهم المفاهيم التي ستحدد مستقبل المؤسسات خلال العقد القادم.

الفكرة بسيطة، لكنها عميقة.

لن تكون المؤسسات الأكثر نجاحًا في عصر الذكاء الاصطناعي هي تلك التي تمتلك أفضل النماذج أو أكثر الأدوات تطورًا.

بل ستكون المؤسسات التي تنجح في بناء الثقة.

في عالم يستطيع فيه الذكاء الاصطناعي إنتاج النصوص والصور والأصوات والقرارات، تصبح الثقة هي الأصل الأكثر قيمة.

أسميت هذه الفكرة الذكاء الموثوق (Trusted Intelligence).

ليس المقصود بها الذكاء الاصطناعي وحده، ولا سرعة الإنجاز، ولا عدد الساعات التي توفرها التقنيات الحديثة، بل قدرة المؤسسة على أن تكون الجهة التي يثق بها الناس عندما يصبح كل شيء قابلًا للتوليد أو التقليد أو التزييف.

وهذه الفكرة ستكون الخيط الذي يربط كل ما سأكتبه هنا.

For the past few years, I have written about artificial intelligence in places that were never quite mine. A Forbes column has a house style. A press interview gets cut to the quote that fits the segment. A LinkedIn post disappears in a day. As an AI expert in Lebanon and the wider Arab region, I wanted one place where I could think out loud, in full sentences, for as long as the idea needed and not a word longer because an editor said so.

I am Hilda Maalouf Melki, an Oxford certified AI expert based in Lebanon, a Forbes Business Development Council member, and the author of AI Simplified. Before any of that, I spent twenty five years inside banking and digital transformation in Lebanon, which means I came to artificial intelligence the way most institutions eventually have to. Not as a hobby, but as a structural problem that needed solving inside a real organization with real constraints.

That background shapes everything I write. I am not interested in AI as a topic for awe. I am interested in AI as a topic for governance, for strategy, and for honest decision making at the level of a board, a ministry, or a bank across the Arab region.

The institutions that win in the AI era will not be the ones with the best products. They will be the ones that earn trust inside an economy where intelligence is everywhere and verification is scarce.

What does an AI expert in the Arab region actually write about?

I recently wrote two pieces for Forbes that, taken together, say something I believe will matter more over the next decade than almost anything else being written about artificial intelligence right now. The short version is this. The companies and institutions that win in the AI era will not be the ones with the best products. They will be the ones that earn trust inside an economy where intelligence is everywhere and verification is scarce.

I called this trusted intelligence. Not artificial intelligence on its own, and not efficiency gains measured in hours saved, but the much harder and much more durable asset of being the institution people choose to believe when everything else can be synthesized, predicted, or faked.

That idea will run through everything I publish here. It is the thread connecting AI governance, strategy, institutional transformation, and the very specific challenges that Arab region leaders face across Lebanon, the Gulf, Egypt, and the Levant as they try to build for a future that is arriving faster than most governance frameworks can handle.

What to expect over the next ten weeks

I will publish one essay a week here, in English and in Arabic, covering AI strategy and governance, and what I am seeing inside Arab institutions as they try to figure out what AI actually means for them, not what a vendor’s slide deck says it means. Some weeks will expand on frameworks I have already started building in Forbes. Some weeks will be entirely new. All of them will be written here first, in my own words, without anyone else’s house style attached.

What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to systems that:

• Do not wait for instructions

• Set goals and plan actions

• Execute tasks autonomously

• Learn and adapt continuously

This is no longer a support tool. It behaves closer to a digital actor inside the system.

Where It Is Already Transforming Industries

We are already seeing early adoption across sectors:

• Customer Service: Autonomous responses and issue resolution

• Finance: Portfolio monitoring and risk assessment

• Operations: Task execution without human intervention

• Marketing: Real-time adaptive campaigns

The shift is subtle but structural.

The Real Challenge Is Not Technology anymore It is Control

As AI begins to act independently, the real questions emerge:

• Can we trust autonomous decisions?

• How do we secure systems that operate on their own?

• Where does accountability sit?

• How do we ensure ethical alignment?

This is no longer a technical discussion.
It is a governance and leadership challenge.

My Perspective

What we are witnessing is not just technological evolution.
It is a shift in agency.

AI is moving from:

• Supporting decisions
  → to participating in decisions
  → to executing decisions

This transformation changes how institutions are structured, how risks are managed, and how leadership is defined.

Final Thought

AI is no longer just intelligence.
It is becoming action.

And the question is no longer:
What can AI do?

It is:
What are we ready to let it decide

?

But Not All Countries Are Moving at the Same Speed

Artificial intelligence is no longer a future discussion.
It is already shaping economies, institutions, and global competitiveness.

But the reality is uneven:
while some countries are accelerating, others are still structurally unprepared.

A Region Moving at Two Speeds

Across the Middle East, a clear divergence is emerging:

• Gulf countries are investing heavily in AI infrastructure

• Governments and private sectors are aligned

• Data centers, policy frameworks, and funding are accelerating adoption

At the same time:

• Lebanon’s AI progress is driven largely by the private sector

• Talent is present—but infrastructure is limited

• Institutional alignment remains fragmented

This creates a structural gap not in capability, but in execution.

AI Is Not Just Technology, It Is Strategy

What distinguishes leading countries is not access to AI.
It is how AI is positioned:

• As a national priority

• As an economic driver

• As an integrated institutional strategy

AI is no longer an innovation layer.
It is becoming part of state-level architecture.

The Risk of Falling Behind

Without:

• Infrastructure

• Governance frameworks

• Strategic investment

Countries risk becoming consumers of AI, not creators of value.

This has long-term implications on:

• Economic sovereignty

• Talent retention

• Institutional competitiveness

My Perspective

The conversation about AI in emerging markets often focuses on limitations.

But the reality is different.

The region does not lack talent.
It lacks structure, alignment, and execution frameworks.

AI readiness is no longer about awareness.
It is about decision-making at the leadership level.

Final Thought

AI will not wait for readiness.

It will move where:

• Decisions are fast

• Systems are aligned

• Investments are clear

And the question is no longer:
Who understands AI?

It is:
Who is structurally ready to deploy it at scale?

• Automated financial decisions based on predictive models

• Digital assets enabling faster, borderless transactions

• Smart systems reducing reliance on intermediaries

Even central banks are beginning to integrate AI into monitoring and policy frameworks, signaling that this shift is institutional not experimental.

The Real Question Is Not Adoption, It is Readiness

The issue is no longer whether these technologies will be used.

They already are.

The real challenge is:

• Governance

• Regulation

• Trust frameworks

• Institutional readiness

Without these, innovation risks outpacing control.

What we are witnessing is not a replacement of financial systems.

It is a transition from static finance to intelligent finance.

A system where:

• Decisions are data-driven

• Transactions are automated

• Systems learn and adapt in real time

This changes not only how money moves—
but how institutions think.

The future of finance will not be defined by currency alone.

It will be defined by the intelligence behind it.

And the real question is no longer:
Will AI and digital currencies be used?

It is:
Who will use them with structure, responsibility, and vision?
